Learn Why You Need Jesus and How You Can Know Him!
This site communicates why you need Jesus and how you can know Him. The Bible declares the power and glory of God from the beginning with the creation of the universe. In the beginning, Adam and Eve communed with God face to face, but chose to disobey God's commandment. This resulted in separation from God. Likewise, we follow after Adam by disobeying God's commands and are separated from God.
The Bible tells of God's past judgment of sin by water (i.e. Noah's flood) and God's future judgment of sin by fire (i.e. Judgment Day). You can avoid God's coming judgment and gain eternal life by receiving Jesus Christ. The Bible proclaims Jesus Christ as the only source of salvation. He was crucified to atone for your sins, and arose on the third day to show his power over sin and death.
Learn how you can know for sure you're going to heaven! These are not my ideas. Substantially all of this site contains Scripture directly quoted from the Bible. Will you read what the Bible says about these things?

Was Jesus Married?
Did Jesus have a secret marriage with Mary Magdalene?
Mrs. Jesus
Has history been wrong for 2000 years---was there a Mrs. Jesus Christ? In, “The Jesus Family Tomb,” (The Discovery Channel’s TV documentary) director Simcha Jacobovici claims there is “evidence” that Jesus and Mary Magdalene indeed were married and had a son named Judah (To see what scholars say about Jacobovici’s “evidence” see, "The Jesus Family Tomb" article ). Jacobovici is not the first to postulate a possible romantic relationship between Jesus and Mary. The movie, The Last Temptation of Christ, and books such as Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and The Da Vinci Code, made a secret relationship between Jesus and Mary central to their themes.
The Da Vinci Code begins with a page of facts that makes the fictional novel appear to be true in all its assertions. The book has broken all records on the New York Times best-sellers list, and has been followed by a blockbuster movie. Author Dan Brown’s clever weaving of fact with fiction has convinced many readers that Jesus and Mary Magdalene really were married and had a child (see “Mona Lisa’s Smirk”). But is this romantic assertion just hype to sell books and movies, or is it supported by historical evidence.
Mysterious Mary
Before we examine the evidence for any possible romance between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, let’s look into this person of Mary from the little Galilean town of Magdala. To begin we ask the question, what ancient documents shed light upon her character and her relationship with Jesus of Nazareth?
The New Testament gospels are the oldest written records of Mary of Magdala. In the gospels Mary is depicted as a woman who Jesus healed of demon possession. The gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John) present Mary as a follower of Jesus who listened to his teaching, provided for his financial needs, witnessed his crucifixion, and three days later was first to see him alive.
Some have said Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, but neither the apostles nor the early church speak of her as more than one of Jesus’ close disciples. The idea that she was a prostitute originated in the sixth century, when Pope Gregory I identified her as both the woman spoken of in Luke 7:37, and the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her hair.
Although the pope’s view was probably influenced by the fact that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her, no biblical scholar is able to make the connection of Mary Magdalene with the woman in Luke’s passage. Additionally, the New Testament gospels don’t even hint of anything romantic or sexual between Jesus and Mary.
So where do conspiracy theorists get the idea? Why all the speculation? For that we turn to documents written 100-200 years after the New Testament gospels by a non-Christian cult called the Gnostics [see Gnostic Gospels]. These writings are not part of the New Testament, and were rejected by early Christians as heretical. Those who write of a romantic relationship between Jesus and Mary cite a few passages from two of those writings, the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Philip. Let’s look at those passages.
The Gospel of Mary (Magdalene)
The notion that Mary Magdalene was special to Jesus is taken primarily from the Gospel of Mary. This Gnostic gospel is not part of the New Testament, and was written by an unknown author in the last half of the second century, or about one hundred fifty years after Jesus’ death. No eyewitnesses, including Mary, would have been alive at the time it was written (about 150 A. D.). Such a late date means the Gospel of Mary could not have been written by an eyewitness of Jesus, and no one knows who wrote it.
One verse in the Gospel of Mary refers to Mary Magdalene as Jesus’ favorite disciple, saying he loved Mary “more than us (meaning his disciples).” In another verse Peter supposedly told Mary, “Sister, we know the savior loved you more than any other woman.” Yet nothing written in The Gospel of Mary speaks of a romance or sexual relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus.
The Gospel of Philip
The Da Vinci Code bases its claim that Jesus and Mary were married and had a child primarily upon one solitary verse in the Gnostic Gospel of Philip that indicates Jesus and Mary were “companions”. This verse reads: (Brackets appear where words of the document are missing or illegible)
Three women always walked with the master: Mary his mother, [] sister, and Mary of Magdala, who is called his companion (koinonos). For “Mary” is the name of his sister, his mother and his companion (koinonos).
In The Da Vinci Code, fictional expert Sir Leigh Teabing proffers that the word for companion (koinonos) could mean spouse. But according to scholars, that is an unlikely interpretation. To begin, the word generally used for wife in New Testament Greek is “gune”, not “koinonos.” Ben Witherington III, writing in Biblical Archaeological Review, addressed this very point:
There was another Greek word, gune, which would have made this clear. It is much more likely that koinonos here means “sister” in the spiritual sense since that is how it is used elsewhere in this sort of literature. In any case, this text does not clearly say or even suggest that Jesus was married, much less married to Mary Magdalene.1
There is also a single verse in the Gospel of Philip that says Jesus kissed Mary.
The companion of the [] is Mary of Magdala. The [] her more than [] the disciples, [] kissed her often on her []. The other []...said to him, “Why do you love her more than all of us?”
Greeting friends with a kiss was common in the first century, and had no sexual connotation. Professor Karen King explains in her book The Gospel of Mary Magdala, that the kiss in Philip most likely was a chaste kiss of fellowship.
But perhaps more important is the fact that the Gospel of Philip was written by an unknown author about 200 years after the New Testament eyewitness accounts (see “Is the New Testament Reliable” and “Mona Lisa’s Smirk”).
It is also important to note that, aside from these few questionable passages, there is no other historical document that even insinuates Jesus and Mary had a romantic relationship. No secular historian, Jewish historian, or early Christian historian writes even one iota about such a relationship. And since both the Gospel of Mary and the Gospel of Philip were written 100-220 years after Christ by unknown authors, their statements about Jesus and Mary need to be evaluated in context of both contemporary history and the much earlier New Testament documents.
Scholars' Verdict
But could the early church have destroyed the evidence in their attempt to rewrite the history of Jesus? Of course that’s what Jacobovici, Brown, and a host of other sensationalists are saying. But do scholars agree?
A Newsweek magazine article summarizing leading scholars’ opinions, flatly states that the notion Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married has no historical basis.2 Perhaps the Gnostics felt the New Testament was a bit shy on romance and decided to sauce it up a little. Whatever the reason, these isolated and obscure verses written 100-200 years after Christ aren’t much to base a conspiracy theory upon. Interesting reading perhaps, but definitely not history.
But some remain unconvinced. Perhaps they just want to make history more interesting. Award-winning television journalist Frank Sesno asked a panel of historical scholars about the fascination people have with conspiracy theories. Professor Stanley Kutler from the University of Wisconsin replied, “We all love mysteries – but we love conspiracies more.”3
Perhaps all the hype about Jesus and Mary has more to do with antagonists to Christianity trying to humanize the man who Christians from the very beginning have called “God.” (To read more about how the early Christians viewed Jesus see “Mona Lisa’s Smirk”). For example, the apostle Paul said of Jesus Christ,
Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form” (Philippians 2:6, 7a).
John, an eyewitness, and one of Jesus’ closest disciples, said of him,
In the beginning the word already existed. He was with God, and he was God….He created everything there is….so the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. (portions of John 1:1-3, 14).
The greatest question of our time is not whether Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, but, who is the real Jesus Christ? Was he just an exceptional man, or was he God in the flesh, as Paul, John, and his other disciples believed? (See “Jesus Complex” for further reading on the identity of Jesus Christ).

Can Jesus Bring Meaning to Life?
“Why Jesus” looks at the question of whether or not Jesus is relevant today. Can Jesus answer the big questions of life: “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” And, “Where am I going?” Dead cathedrals and crucifixes have led some to believe that he can’t, and that Jesus has left us to cope with a world out of control. But Jesus made claims about life and our purpose here on earth that need to be examined before we write him off as uncaring or impotent. This article examines the mystery of why Jesus came to earth.

Don't Fear the Wiki! Business Can Benefit
By Mary O. Foley
Fear is one of the obstacles keeping businesses from realizing productivity gains by using internal wikis. But the business gains -- collaboration, informed employees, sense of community -- may outweigh any risks.
Wikis are making Josh Postman’s worklife easier -- and greener. Since adopting wiki technology at Eastwick Communications, a 40-person public-relations firm in Mountain View, Calif., Postman has seen the e-mail traffic in his office fall by 40 percent.

Business Blogs You Should Know About
By Janet Rae-Dupree
Covering such topics as financing, management, and entrepreneurship, these are a must-read for people in business.
Blogs increasingly are becoming an important business tool for marketing to customers and mining for new prospects. But entrepreneurs can also learn a thing or two about venture capital, management, research and the world of business by reading and subscribing to blogs. There has been such an explosion of business blogs that it can be hard to find the valuable voices in the cacophony of blogs and podcasts out there. Here’s a guide to some that offer more value for your click-through time:
Business Blog Consulting: Yes, it’s a blog about -- what else? -- business blogs. But it’s an important business blog, too, with 15 contributors providing a daily stream of relevant new material. It’s focused on demonstrating how effective blogs can be for marketing and communicating with customers, but it also provides plenty of material about how to use a variety of Internet technologies to their best business advantage.
Business Pundit: While Businesspundit primarily covers entrepreneurship, chief contributor Rob May notes in the home logo that the site covers “entrepreneurship, corporate strategy, some occasional neuroscience and anything that interests me.” It’s an educational -- and entertaining -- look inside the thoughts of a adjunct professor at the University of Louisville in Kentucky who holds both an MBA and a degree in electrical engineering, and who has been an entrepreneur, small business owner and salesperson. He also co-founded content aggregator Commercebucket, which lets users contribute and rate the best business and financial news stories they find on the Web.
Feld Thoughts Brad Feld, a managing director at Mobius Venture Capital, is a voracious reader and relaxed -- but insightful -- writer. Reading his blog is like looking over the shoulder of an accomplished venture capitalist as he moves through his business day. That might explain why, according to Technorati, nearly 2,600 other sites link to Feld’s blog.
Gartner Blogs: This listing cheats a bit because it actually links to nine active blogs and a couple dozen archived blogs. Each of the blogs offers entries by various members of the Gartner research crew, an incredibly rich source of information about all things business and technology. The collection is carefully moderated, frequently updated and always informative.
Jeff Matthew Is Not Making This Up: While it’s true that he lifted his blog’s title from humor master Dave Barry, Jeff Matthews is still a very funny man in his own right. And he also offers a refreshing point of view on Wall Street and its many foibles. Together, these factors make for both an entertaining and educational read.
Management By Baseball: What this site lacks in organization and visual appeal it more than makes up for in hard-hitting baseball analogies about business. Blogger (and former baseball writer) Jeff Angus created the site as a companion to his spring 2006 book Management by Baseball: The Official Rules for Winning Management in Any Field. Rather than re-hashing the book, though, Angus posts new material once or twice a week. Our favorite pithy comment? "Managing is getting paid for home runs someone else hits," said New York Yankees manager Casey Stengel.
Manager Tools: Not strictly a blog, Manager Tools is a weekly podcast focused on practical techniques for effective management. Rather than an MBA course on management theory, Manager Tools offers a host of specific day-to-day actions anyone can try. The online forums featuring advice about conducting one-on-one meetings, hiring practices and favorite books are particularly noteworthy.

You want to put a tracking device where?!
By Janine Love
About 12 years ago at a microwaves show, I recall talking to a vendor who was very enthusiastic about his chips that could be slipped under the skin of cows. Easy to track, easy to record which cows have been milked, how much each cow produces etc. I listened to him intently. Then, I remarked, somewhat offhandedly, wonder how long it will be before we start tagging schoolchildren. He looked a little nervous.
Well, news broke recently of a program in the UK to tag school children's uniforms. The idea is that schools can use it to bolster security, recordkeeping, etc. While I applaud efforts to keep children safe in school, the observation was quickly made that a child could ditch school and ask (or compel) another student to carry around his or her sweater, tie, vest, etc.
This story comes on the heels of news earlier this month that California has banned mandatory RFID implants in humans. The irony of this bill being signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is just too amusing not to comment on. Does anyone recall the name of the movie where Schwarzenegger (in his second career) has to forcibly remove a huge round tracking device from his nasal cavity? Drop a comment on this article if you can recall it.
Anyway, from time spent at RFID World, I am convinced that RFID technology is mature and ready to deploy. Now, we as a society need to sit down and decide when, how, and how much. Undoubtedly we are in for a lot of legal wrangling. Let's hope our governments keep up with the technology. What do you think?

Dialing and Driving

A few weeks ago, the following story on this site got some attention from you: Cell Phones Don't Cause Car Crashes, New Research Suggests. For more details, you can check out the Berkeley news release, which points to the actual report by the economist graduate students for even more info. Most of you who responded didn't believe the study results. As one RFDesignLine reader pointed out, this study looks exclusively at evening cell phone usage.
I am no economist, in fact, that was my LEAST favorite course in college, except for, perhaps, philosophyAnyway, I digress. I am no economist, but I do drive a lot. And, I live in New Jersey, a state that leads the nation in its automobile density. (Think of the old Genesis tune Land of Confusion, "To many people, going too many places, making too many problems")
Despite the availability of cheap hands-free kits and laws prohibiting it, everyday I see people on their cell phones driving. In fact, my favorite was last week, someone pushing out of a parking lot, across two lanes of eastbound bumper to bumper traffic to make a west bound turn, all with one hand on the wheel and the other with a phone pressed to his ear. Couldn't he have tossed it on the seat for just a minute? It seems that people have grown so confident in their cell phone handling abilities that they are taking on the most dramatic driving maneuvers while on the phone. It sure seems like this kind of driving has to increase accident rates. At the very least, it must contribute to road rage! I, for one, was totally annoyed by the behavior.
Admittedly, driving in the car is an excellent time to take care of those pesky phone calls that I can never get to. But I have to wonder, what are we risking versus what is gained? I hope that this subject excites further study. What do you think? Respond to the comment section on the article, Cell Phones Don't Cause Car Crashes, New Research Suggests

The Sounds of Silence
By Janine Love
I'm the first person to celebrate the always on connectivity of having a mobile phone. I love being a few rings away when I'm not with my kids. I love how much better the coverage is since I first started using a phone. (You know, the day I started using it to communicate rather than leaving it in the glove box for a "just in case of emergency" moment.)
But I have to confess, I miss the sounds of silence. No longer can a group of parents sit in a waiting room at a gymnastics or karate class and quietly read. There is always someone with some obnoxious ring tone going off. Either they jump up and run out the door, or, worse, sit next to you and talk as loudly as my father used to when making a trans-Atlantic phone call.
There is no place that is sacred for silence anymore. Not the woods. Not the beach. Certainly not the grocery store, where everyone seems to be on the phone. Even in church, people forget to silence their phones and frantically grab for their bag to run out with the phone. Perhaps the most horrifying place to hear someone's phone go off is in a public restroom, but let's not go there.
A friend of mine does not have a mobile phone. Oh, she has one for work, but leaves it off when she is not there. She goes hiking every weekend, biking, and rides her horse. All without a mobile phone. I'll admit, sometimes I give her a hard time about being out of touch"if you had a phone, I could have told you where I was so we could meet.." She has decided to embrace the sounds of silence, at least in her time off from work. In truth, I admire her independent spirit. Maybe I'll call her and tell her that.

[edit] Modern new year celebrations
For further information, see New Year's Eve and New Year's Day
The most common modern dates of celebration are listed below, ordered and grouped by their appearance relative to the conventional Western calendar.
[edit] January
1 January: The first official day of the year in the Gregorian calendar used by most countries.
In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the civil New Year falls on 14 January (1 January in the Julian Calendar). Many in the countries where Eastern Orthodoxy predominates celebrate both the Gregorian and Julian New Year holidays, with the Gregorian day celebrated as a civic holiday, and the Julian date as the "Old New Year", a religious holiday. The Church's own liturgical calendar begins on September 1, thereby proceeding annually from the celebration of Jesus' birth in the winter (Christmas). through his death and resurrection in the spring (Pascha / Easter), to his Ascension in the summer, and the assumption of his mother (Dormition of the Theotokos / Virgin Mary) in the fall.
Note: Eight of the twelve biggest Eastern Orthodox Churches have adopted the Revised Julian calendar administratively and the civic and religious holidays match. The orthodox population of Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Poland, Romania, Syria and Turkey celebrate the New Year on January 1. The orthodox churches of Georgia, Jerusalem, Russia and Serbia still use the Julian Calendar.
The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, occurs every year on the new moon of the first lunar month, about four to eight weeks before spring (Lichun). The exact date can fall anytime between 21 January and 21 February (inclusive) of the Gregorian Calendar. Because the lunisolar Chinese calendar is astronomically defined, unlike the Gregorian Calendar, the drift of the seasons will change the range. Each year is symbolized by one of 12 animals and one of five elements, with the combinations of animals and elements (or stems) cycling every 60 years. It is the most important Chinese holiday of the year.
The Vietnamese New Year is the Tết Nguyên Đán which is for most times the same day as the Chinese New Year.
The Tibetan New Year is Losar and falls from January through March.
The Khmer, Thai, Laotian and Burmese New Year is called the SangKran and falls from 13th to 15th of April.
[edit] March
Hola Mohalla, New Year's Day in the Sikh Nanakshahi calendar is on March 14.
The Iranian New Year, called Norouz, is the day containing the exact moment of the vernal equinox, commencing the start of the spring season. In 2007 this falls on 20 March.
The Zoroastrian New Year coincides with the Iranian New Year of Norouz. It is celebrated by the Parsis in India and by Zoroastrians and Persians across the world.
In the Bahá'í calendar, the new year occurs on the vernal equinox on 21 March, and is called Naw-Rúz.
In the Saka Calendar (Balinese-Javanese Calendar) the celebration of new year falls on 30rd of March in this year. the celebration gather of Nyepi, Balinese Hindu holiday.
The Telugu New Year generally falls in the months of March or April. The people of Andhra Pradesh, India celebrate the advent of Lunar year this day. This day is celebrated across entire Andhra Pradesh as UGADI(Meaning the Start of a new Year.).The first month is Chaitra Masam. Masam means month.
Gudi Padwa is celebrated as the first day of the Hindu year by the people of Maharashtra, India. This day falls in March or April and coincides with Ugadi. (see: Deccan)
The Kannada New Year or Ugadi is celebrated by the people of Karnataka, India as the beginning of a new year according to the Hindu Calendar. The first month of the new Year is Chaitra.
Sindhi festival of Cheti Chand is celebrated on the same day as Ugadi/Gudi Padwa to mark the celebration of the Sindhi New Year.
[edit] April
The Assyrian New Year, called Rish Nissanu, occurs on 1 April
The Punjabi new year Vaisakhi is celebrated on 13 April and celebrates the harvest.
The Nepali new year is celebrated in spring, on the first day of the lunar month Baisakh. In the English calender, it usually falls between 12 - 15 April.
The Thai and Lao New Year are celebrated from 13 April to 15 April by splashing water.
The Cambodian New Year and Lao New Year are celebrated from 13 April to 15 April.
The Bengali New Year Pohela Baisakh is celebrated on 14 April or 15 April in a festive manner in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.
The Sinhalese New Year falls In April (the month of Bak) when the sun moves from the Meena Rashiya (House of Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (House of Aries) Sri Lankans begin celebrating their National New Year "Aluth Avurudhu" in Sinhala and "Puththandu (புத்தாண்டு)" in Tamil. However, unlike the usual practice where the new year begins at midnight, the National New Year begins at the time determined by the astrologers. Not only the beginning of the new year but the conclusion of the old year is also specified by the astrologers. And unlike the customary ending and beginning of new year, there is a period of a few hours in between the conclusion of the Old Year and the commencement of the New Year , which is called the "nona gathe" (neutral period). During this time one is expected to keep off from all types of work and engage solely in religious activities.
In India, the Tamil New Year and Vishu are celebrated on the same day respectively in the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They generally fall on 13 April or 14 April. The first month of the Tamil New Year is called Chithrai. Every year in the month of Chithrai, in the temple city of Madurai, the Chithrai Thiruvizha is celebrated in the Meenakshi Temple. A huge exhibition is also held, called Chithrai Porutkaatchi. In some parts of Southern Tamil Nadu, it is also called Chithrai Vishu. The day is marked with a feast in Hindu homes and the entrance to the houses are decorated elaborately with kolams.
[edit] Northern fall
Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew for 'head of the year') is a holiday commemorating the culmination of the six days of Creation, and marking God's yearly renewal of His world. The day has elements of festivity and introspection, as God is traditionally believed to be assessing His creation and determining the fate of all men and creatures for the coming year.
In the Coptic Orthodox Church, the New Year, called Neyrouz, coincides with 11 September in the Gregorian calendar between 1900 and 2099, with the exception of the year before Gregorian leap years, when Neyrouz occurs on 12 September). The Coptic year 1723 began in September 2005. The Ethiopian Orthodox New Year, called Enkutatash, falls on the same date as Neyrouz; the Ethiopian calendar year 1999 thus began on September 11, 2006.
The Marwari New Year is celebrated on the day of the festival of Diwali
The Gujarati New Year is usually celebrated the day after the festival of Diwali (which occurs in mid-fall - either October or November, depending on the Lunar calendar). The Gujarati New Year is synonymous with sud ekam of the Kartik month - the first day of the first month of Gujarati lunar calendar. Most other Hindus celebrate the New Year in early spring, but the Gujarati farming community celebrates the New Year after Diwali to mark the beginning of a new fiscal year.
Some neo-pagans celebrate Samhain (a festival of the ancient Celts, held around November 1) as a new year's day representing the new cycle of the Wheel of the Year, although they do not use a different calendar that starts on this day.
[edit] Variable
The Islamic New Year occurs on 1 Muharram. Since the Muslim calendar is based on 12 lunar months amounting to about 354 days, the Gregorian date of this is about eleven days earlier each year. 2008 will see two Muslim New Years.
The Thelemic new year is usually celebrated with an invocation to Ra-Hoor-Khuit, commemorating the beginning of the New Aeon in 1904. It also marks the start of the twenty two day Thelemic holy season.
[edit] Historical dates for the new year
The ancient Roman calendar had only ten months and started the year on 1 March, which is still reflected in the names of some months which derive from Latin: September (seventh), October (eighth), November (ninth), December (tenth). Around 713 BC the months of January and February were added to the year, traditionally by the second king, Numa Pompilius, along with the leap month Intercalaris. The year used in dates was the consular year, which began on the day when consuls first entered office — fixed by law at 15 March in 222 BC[1], but this event was moved to 1 January in 153 BC. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, dropping Intercalaris; however, 1 January continued to be the first day of the new year.
In the Middle Ages in Europe a number of significant feast days in the ecclesiastical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church came to be used as the beginning of the Julian year:
In Christmas Style dating the new year started on 25 December. This was used in Germany and England until the thirteenth century, and in Spain from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century.
In Annunciation Style dating the new year started on 25 March, the feast of the Annunciation. This was used in many parts of Europe in the Middle Ages, and was the style introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in AD 525. Annunciation Style continued to be used in the Kingdom of Great Britain until January 1, 1752, except Scotland which changed to Circumcision Style dating on 1 January 1600. The rest of Great Britain changed to Circumcision Style on the 1 January preceding the conversion in Great Britain from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar on 3/14 September 1752. The UK tax year still starts on 6 April which is 25 March + 12 days, eleven for the conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar plus a dropped leap day in 1900.
In Easter Style dating, the new year started on Easter Saturday (or sometimes on Good Friday). This was used in France from the eleventh to the sixteenth century. A disadvantage of this system was that because Easter was a movable feast the same date could occur twice in a year; the two occurrences were distinguished as "before Easter" and "after Easter".
In Circumcision Style dating, the new year started on 1 January, the Feast of the Circumcision (of Jesus).
[edit] Adoption of 1 January as New Year
It took quite a long time before the adoption of the 1st of January as the start of the year became widespread. The years of adoption are as follows -
1522 Venice
1544 Holy Roman Empire. The area covered included Germany, Austria and their future territories.
1556 Spain, Portugal, Roman Catholic (southern) Netherlands. This extended to all Spanish and Portuguese territories and outposts in the Americas and around the world.
1559 Prussia, Denmark, Sweden
1564 France. The dating applied to all subsequently acquired French territories.
1579 Lorraine
1583 Protestant (northern) Netherlands
1600 Scotland
1725 Russia, and its future territories.
1721 Tuscany
1752 Britain and its colonies. This included the east coast of what would become the United States and Canada. Also as each part of the world came within the sway of English law, the English style dates applied. Over time that would include large swathes of Africa, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
When the Gregorian calendar started to be adopted, at different times in different countries, after 1592, the new year's day was again unaligned, with the countries still using the Julian calendar being 10 days ahead of those that adopted the Gregorian calendar. The discrepancy increased to 11 days in 1600, and 12 in 2000.
The ancient Roman New Year of 1 March was used in the Republic of Venice until its destruction in 1797, and in Russia from 988 until the end of the 15th century. 1 September was used in Russia from the end of the 15th century until the adoption of the Christian era in 1700 (previously, Russia had counted years since the creation of the world).
Since the 17th century, the Roman Catholic ecclesiastic year has started on the first day of Advent, the Sunday nearest to St. Andrew's Day (30 November).
Autumnal equinox day (usually 22 September) was "New Year's Day" in the French Republican Calendar, which was in use from 1793 to 1805. This was primidi Vendemière, the first day of the first month.
[edit] Time Zones
Because of the division of the globe into time zones, the new year moves progressively around the globe as the start of the day ushers in the New Year. The first time zone to usher in the New Year is just west of the International Date Line. At that time the time zone to the east of the Date Line is 23 hours behind, still in the previous day. The residents on the central Pacific Ocean island of Kiritimati (Christmas Island), the eastern-most island in the island nation of Kiribati claim to be the first to usher in the New Year.

The Cambodian New Year and Lao New Year are celebrated from 13 April to 15 April.
